Good Out-of-the Box, But There's More!
Let me assume, if you're bothering to read this, you're either a beginner considering a first bass (in which case, please read on) or you're a seasoned musical hobbyist who already understands the basic goodness and "hot rodding" potential of inexpensive Squier instruments (in which case, click "Buy Now").

Squier by Fender Affinity Jazz Bass Review
The affinity jazz bass is a visually identical to its big brother the Mexican made standard fender jazz bass, but is obviously internally much less complex. While they share a maple neck, rosewood fretboard, twenty frets, and a polyurethane finished neck, the similarities pretty much end there. I have experience playing both guitars and the standard j bass is clearly much better in most ways.
With that being said, I can tell you cannot get a better bass for the money than the affinity jazz bass. Every finish offered for the affinity j looks great. They are very well put together guitars and have a general feeling of quality. Compared to a standard fender jazz bass, it definitely has a less warm tone, and is harder to pick up and start playing without some fret buzz. But if it the strings are set lower then it is a very good feeling guitar. Listening to the two basses you can definitely hear a significant difference in brightness and warmth of tone, but for the money, the jazz...
